Turning on Origin’s Testnet Faucet

We’re building a platform for creating decentralized marketplaces that provides buyers and sellers with a “digital town square” where they can find each other. The Origin token is an integral part of this platform, creating the right incentives to ensure the health and growth of the network.

With the latest version of the Origin DApp (and our final big release before main net!) you’ll see the first example of how Origin tokens can be used within the Origin platform. The token behaves as an incentive for DApp creators to promote listings and help drive sales. Sellers on the Origin platform can choose to “boost” their listings to get higher visibility and achieve more sales. Listing on the Origin platform remains totally free (except for gas costs), but the optional commission creates an incentive for DApp operators to feature or promote listings.

You can promote or “boost” your listings using the Origin token

Alongside our latest release, we’ve created a free Origin faucet that is available for the Rinkeby and Ropsten test networks. This faucet will send you 100 fake OGN tokens for testing purposes. Long time members of the community may remember the days when you could get free Bitcoin by visiting a faucet website and clicking a button. While Origin’s faucet tokens are worthless like tokens on other testnets, this tool will allow our developers and extended community to start testing our new token-related functionality.

Going forward, we will continue exploring other functionality for the Origin token including governance and additional incentive mechanisms. For example, we think it would be great if Origin Token holders could influence the direction of software development and business policies on the Origin Platform.

In the future, Origin Tokens may also be used to incentivize other forms of participation from the Platform’s ecosystem participants. Origin Tokens may be used to reward users, developers, marketplace operators, and/or other participants to perform actions and services that are beneficial to the health and growth of the Platform. In other instances, participants may need to acquire and use Origin Tokens for taking actions on the Platform, with the goal of creating disincentives for malicious or fraudulent behavior.

This is a symbolic milestone for us and it’s fun to finally see the Origin Token in action. Get your free (and totally worthless) tokens today at: faucet.staging.originprotocol.com.
