The latest releases of the OriginTrail network node have brought many important improvements to the codebase, enabling several new use cases and providing the ability to utilize the OriginTrail Decentralized Knowledge graph for exchanging both public and privately held verifiable information. This major milestone in the Freedom-Gemini stage of the protocol development was materialized with the 4.1 release in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak. The outbreak itself brought to light many of the problems that occur when supply chains globally are under stress.

Such tough situations tend to uncover weak spots in many different areas, ranging from major logistics issues, uncertain supply and unpredictable demand, to the emergence of unethical activities of con artists not only causing financial losses but also endangering the safety of many who receive fake personal protective equipment. The internet has been hit with a spike in traffic, having companies such as Netflix, YouTube, and Facebook be approached by the EU commission requesting them to “take steps to ensure the smooth functioning of the internet during the crisis” as the networks were hit by an unprecedented load due to quarantine measures across the globe.

The crisis has on the other hand been a great battle test for today’s infrastructure, and the global IT systems have so far held well. Decentralized networks, in particular, provide a high level of availability due to their resilient nature. We at Trace Labs are extremely proud to see that not only has the OriginTrail Decentralized Network proven stable during such times, it has also further increased in size to 265+ nodes actively participating in offer negotiations, which is a ~15% increase.

The Freedom-Gemini stage has so far seen 13 releases, and since the major 4.1 release, the core development team has introduced several important performance improvements and bug fixes to enhance the performance of the OriginTrail Decentralized Knowledge Graph. These include Merkle proof calculation improvements, additional security enhancements, new features in GS1 EPCIS data handling, improvements to backup procedures, and the ability to view the current TGS of one via the node API.

Further increasing the resilience of ODN

As announced in December 2019, the OriginTrail Decentralized Network participation stake will be increased to 3000 TRAC tokens per running node to maintain long-term security of the network. The expected time of the increase is June 22, 2020, at 12:00PM UTC (14:00 CEST), with a time margin of difference within a few Ethereum blocks (up to a couple of minutes) as the change of the required stake is a network parameter governed by the ODN smart contracts. Coinciding with the stake increase event, we are expecting the release of the new mainnet node client (v4.1.4).

What do you need to do to prepare?

If you are running an OriginTrail mainnet node and intend on keeping your node ready to respond to new job offers over the network, you need to add additional tokens to your node stake. This can be done using your node management wallet via the OriginTrail Node Profile interface or Houston v4 interface.

Please make sure to do so before the token stake increase event. In case a node does not have the minimum stake of 3000 TRAC available after the token stake increase event occurs, it will no longer be able to replicate data or apply for new job offers (as it will not have enough readily available tokens) — however, it will continue operating and performing the functionalities for previously acquired data normally. In case you are late and add tokens after the required stake increase, the node will start actively participating in the network from the moment you add the required amount of tokens to it. If you are not running an OriginTrail node, no action is required.

Upcoming releases towards Pioneer stage of ODN

As the Q2 of 2020 is drawing to an end, we are looking at a very interesting third quarter, during which one of the most important milestones will be to enable node clustering for high availability, followed by additional optimizations in the node compensation settings, improvements in blockchain and hardware usage among other things. We are excited about the upcoming period and transitioning towards the Pioneer stage, and are looking forward to further developing the ODN together with our fantastic community.
