We are doing a series of articles on the Myth & Mythologies surrounding Electric Vehicles. These Myths lead to misunderstandings & poor adoption of EVs.
As builders of Performance Electric Vehicles (EV), we often get asked all the prevailing myths, mythologies & misunderstandings surrounding EVs & Batteries. EVs are a new(-ish) technology, not yet as stable/known as the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles.
We get asked about “Range”, about charging — whether it’s about charge/swap, to charge slow/fast, or use AC/DC (not the band) — , and the lifecycles of batteries. We also get asked about the pollution caused by EVs (yes! we get asked this!), and so many other doubts.
Take the example of Range —
Whether it’s Fleet Operators or the everyday Consumer, the range of an EV is often the source of much confusion. The confusion is that the “range” often ‘claimed’ by EV manufacturers/traders/dealers absolutely never matches what these EV Users see on the road.
Quite often, these “range estimates” provided in the marketing material are in extremely ideal conditions — the kind that you & I as a normal rider are never going to see in our daily rides.
So what’s the deal here?
Are we forever stuck with these inflated claims of 200Kms/charge, while on road we see only 60Kms even after charging overnight? Will these marketing gimmicks turn away all enthusiasts of EVs? Will the Electric Revolution never happen in India!!??
There are more & more people becoming aware of the value and benefits of driving an EV over an ICE vehicle, and governments world-over are pushing for measures to proliferate EV sales. But, these myths still hold people back from adopting EVs!
