Let OS shine a light on your world. We use location data and intelligence to illuminate the unseen.

As I leave Ordnance Survey to pursue a change in career direction, it has given me a chance to reflect on why I have wanted to be a Solution Architect at Ordnance Survey for much of my career. Why it has been a career-high and why it’s a fantastic choice for any Solution Architect looking to improve their craft.

Ordnance Survey is a forward-thinking organisation that leverages cutting-edge technology for impactful projects related to location data. As a Solutions Architect at Ordnance Survey, you would have the opportunity to work on fascinating initiatives ranging from artificial intelligence and big data to combating climate change.

With over 200 years of history in geospatial data, Ordnance Survey has unparalleled experience in location intelligence. The company has an established yet innovative solutions architecture practice that stays on top of the latest technological advancements. As a Solutions Architect, you would help design systems to power Ordnance Survey’s new range of products and services. Solution Architecture is at the heart of the organisation that has already successfully transitioned into a data and technology organisation years before it became a modern trend.

Ordnance Survey’s projects have real-world significance. For example, the company uses AI and machine learning to analyse patterns in geographical data and imagery, detecting changes over time. This provides valuable insights into shoreline erosion, flood risk modelling, and environmental change monitoring. We work closely with Blue light services providing essential information that helps them save lives. As a Solutions Architect, you would get to work on projects that make a tangible difference on urgent challenges. Ordnance Survey is groundbreaking and award-winning because it focuses on its mission and stays true to its values.

The variety of projects at Ordnance Survey enables Solutions Architects to expand their skills. One day, you may design a cloud-based architecture for spatial analytics applications; the next, you may create an API infrastructure for location data services. Working across diverse domains exposes you to the latest techniques like cloud-native development, geospatial analytics, and location-based services.

Ordnance Survey’s culture also provides an environment where Solutions Architects can thrive. There is an emphasis on innovation and collaboration to push the boundaries of what’s possible with location data. Employees are encouraged to think creatively, try new approaches, and share knowledge across teams. “If you are inquisitive, you will do well here.” is a phrase you will hear on your first day.

Speaking of culture, Ordnance Survey looks at Neurodiversity as a superpower and diversity as a norm. Engagement is constant and continuing, reflected in the HQ in Southampton; the building is a large open space filled with light designed to make it easy to work there. People can work from home or the HQ because it is a lovely place to meet, enjoy a fresh coffee and talk.

If you are interested in joining a team that lies at the heart of OS, they are looking for someone that can demonstrate skills and experience in,

  • The definition and implementation of Solution Architectures within a sophisticated business environment
  • Setting technical direction, translating strategic vision into realisable architectural roadmaps
  • The definition and implementation of business-aligned system roadmaps and architectures
  • Collaborating with and influencing key business and technical stakeholders
  • Providing leadership to technical teams (e.g. solution architects, software engineers, technical specialists) in an agile environment, including management of a small team of architects
  • Defining and delivering enterprise-level Geospatial solutions
  • The capture, maintenance and management of Geospatial data
  • Delivering full-stack solutions on public cloud platforms (e.g. Microsoft Azure)

At Ordnance Survey, location intelligence has boundless potential to inform, empower, and enlighten. As a solutions architect here, you’ll spearhead creative projects that push boundaries and reimagine what’s possible with geospatial data. If tackling meaningful challenges excites you, they offer the opportunities, people, resources, and environment where your talents and ideas will thrive. Join a team of inquisitive minds and help write the next chapter in the mission to harness the power of place—making a positive difference for our nation, our planet, and generations to come. The future awaits …
