Osmosis Community Updates

--

This is the Osmosis Governance Corner, featuring the Osmosis governance proposals that are on-chain for voting this week. Governance proposals are topics where the opinion from the community is requested. Not sure what a governance proposal means or how to vote on it? Read below for a brief summary, and arguments for and against passage of the proposal.

By voting, you have influence on the outcome of the proposal and the direction Osmosis takes. It is important that Osmosis users vote to ensure the voice of the community is heard.

Osmosis allows everyone to voice their thoughts. You can vote on Osmosis governance proposals using various platforms. Scroll to the bottom to find links to them. Participate in ongoing governance discussions at gov.osmosis.zone. Join the discussion and take control of your vote!

Last Weeks Proposals

In this section you will find information about:

  • Proposals which have been described in the previous governance corner update. Only the outcome of the proposal will be listed.
  • Proposals which have not been discussed in the update that may have been put on chain and passed between governance corner articles. For the second category a small summary of the proposal will be given, along with the outcome of the voting.

Discussed in Previous Governance Corner:

551 — Osmosis Max Supply Restoration through Excess OSMO Burn >> Passed
552— Resubmission: Lengthen Thirdening and restore Thirdening impact >> Passed
553 — Launching ERIS Protocol on Osmosis >> Passed
554 — Phase out Incentives on Low Revenue Pools Part 2 >> Passed
555 — Allow Skip API Contract upload >> Passed

Proposals passed or rejected since Previous Governance Corner:

556 —Osmosis v16 Magnesium Upgrade >> Passed
Proposal 556 went on chain on 08–07–2023 and passed on 13–07–2023.
This proposal got approval for the v16 Magnesium upgrade at block 10517000 (which occured on 13–07–2023). The v16 upgrade contains SuperCharged Liquidity, CosmWasm Pool Module and upgrades to ProtoRev. Furthermore the removal of the pool exit fee as voted on in prop #429, Multi Asset Fee whitelisting, optimization for protocols to swap through various pools at the same time to keep slippage as low as possible and changes from Swapfee parameters to Spreadfee parameters to be in line with SuperCharged Liquidity.

557 — Allow DAO DAO and Polytone Contract upload >> Passed
Proposal 557 went on chain on 09–07–2023 and passed on 14–07–2023.
This proposal gives the Osmosis address belonging to the DAO DAO core contributors the ability to upload CosmWasm contracts without requesting governance approval per upload. DAO DAO enables projects and communities immediate access to DAO tooling without creating their own governance modules, smart contracts, DAO management and more. The contract has been deployed on the Osmosis testnet.

Proposals on chain

In this part of our governance corner update you can find a short description of the proposals which can be currently be found on chain. Read more to find out what the proposal is about and some arguments for and against passage of the proposal. This should help you form an opinion on the proposal, and don’t forget to vote!

Proposal 559— Change Commonwealth Posting Requirement to Discourse

Proposal #199 and #438 created guidelines for the preparation of proposals. In these proposals it was determined that a draft should be on Commonwealth for at least 3 days before it should be brought on chain to gather insights which can make the proposals stronger. This proposal requests approval for changing the Commonwealth requirement to requiring a post on the new Discourse page.

Arguments in favor of this proposal

  • Discourse offers a lower barrier for entrance, making it a more accessible place for governance discussions to take place. More people results in better governance preparation.
  • Commonwealth has been closed in this trial period, making sure that conversations are only held on one location to avoid fragmentation of discussions.

Proposal 560 — Alternative Transaction Fee Policy

Since Osmosis v5 (passed in prop #95) approval was given to introduce a method to pay transaction fees on Osmosis in other assets than OSMO. This was introduced in December 2021. Together with the minimum fee requirement as passed in proposal #354 this becomes more important. This proposal seeks approval for a list of 94 assets to be whitelisted as possible asset to pay transaction fees on Osmosis. Check the proposal for the full list. The list will be revised along with major Osmosis chain upgrades in the future.

Arguments in favor of this proposal

  • The list is constructed following hard measurable facts (TVL, maximum swap fee on the pool, duration of TVL required) and can be created without subjective input.

Interesting proposals on Commonwealth

This part of the governance corner update will always contain a maximum of 2 Commonwealth threads which are highly interesting to visit. The threads highlighted here will have a major impact on Osmosis on the long term, so participating in these conversations will allow you to contribute to the future of the project.

Thread — The Governator Manifesto

In the Cosmos ecosystem talks are being initiated to separate the responsibility of governance and the responsibility of chain consensus for validators. The governance part would be covered by so-called “governators” (read more here). Validators and governators can be the same player, but can also be completely separate (for example a validator without being active in governance or the other way around). This has pros and cons of course, and that is where this thread comes in. Join the conversation and help shape the future of validating and governance on Osmosis.

How to vote?

You can vote using various platforms for Osmosis. Simply log in with your wallet (you might need to import your wallet first) and choose Yes / No / NoWithVeto / Abstain on the vote following your own beliefs using the information provided in these blogs. Your own vote always overwrites the vote done by the validator you delegated to, but only for the voting power your address represents.
