Activity Report Vol.31: Otaku Coin Preparation Committee Members Attend Anime Expo!

We traveled to Los Angeles to attend the largest US event for the otaku community.

Anime Expo (herein AX), the biggest anime convention in North America held every year that is always highly anticipated by fans, was held on July 5 to 8 this year. Yet before that, there were also events held which were just like a celebration on the eve of the festival. There was the HATSUNE MIKU EXPO 2018 Los Angeles on June 30, “Love Live! Sunshine!! Aqours 3rd LoveLive! Tour ~WONDERFUL STORIES~” live broadcast at a movie theater in LA on July 1, and “Love Live! Sunshine!! Aqours World Love Live! in LA ~Beyond the Pacific~” on July 4. It was one of the best weeks for all the fans!

AX gathers over 100,000 Japanese pop-culture fans in an “otaku promised land” of exhibition booth and panels. As it is extremely important to otaku, it is extremely important to Otaku Coin, the currency specialized for their community. We attended as fans to experience the event — awe-inspiring in its size and energy — for ourselves.

Even before the event started, energy was high as otaku seem to fill the streets outside the venue which featured buildings draped in anime advertisements creating an exciting atmosphere similar to Akihabara.

The power of anime and otaku culture is felt through this photo which shows fans standing together at the kickoff. The scene shows us that although anime comes from Japan, a huge community has still formed in North America.

Tokyo Otaku Mode, an Otaku Coin Preparation Committee partner and the company which thought up Otaku Coin, had a booth at the event. It was bustling with visitors!

The TOM booth also displayed a standee of the lovely Otaku Coin Ambassador Kizunai AI. This virtual YouTuber had no shortage of fans at AX and many visited the booth to see her!

Otaku Coin advisor Ikegami also attended Anime Expo and snapped a cute selfie for a photo that features two Otaku Coin Preparation Committee members!

AX also had concert and cosplay events for fans to have a complete otaku experience!

Our beliefs in supporting the otaku community as well as that no matter the nationality, otaku culture can make anyone happy, and therefore the world happy, were strengthened with the visit. We hope Otaku Coin will officially be a part of AX and similar events in the near future!
