It has been 20 years since anime productions stopped using “cels.” The concept of “shooting” anime has changed, as well as harmonizing with special effects techniques. Cels (short for “celluloids”) were the basis of animation, a transparent panel that carried the images of the anime. But now, instead of “cels,” works are made of digital art, in which each frame is rendered with precision. Even if the method and materials to produce anime has changed, there is no subsitute for the creators, such as the animators who develop these methods and materials. But now, isn’t the focus of these creators becoming lost and diluted in the digital world? Simply, hasn’t the goal of making works once focused on “art by drawing” become lost?
