The sky seems weaker
In grey. Morning,
uninvited, arrives
like the news.
A remnant of clouds
flattens the street.

We read, in this complaint,
the dawn was golden elsewhere,
the height of trees
above the smoke line housed owls,
and birthday kites that blew
against the whistling wind,

The dancing began, as it does,
at the warning bell. Defiant smiles,
sharp as a butterfly,
cut the razor wire.
The elemental harmony
of sound reasoning rested.

A broom to the steps
prepares commerce.
The power of a barrel of laughs
adjusts the lens.
Memory stirs the spoon fed
voter like a broken bone.
