There are more than 290 billion work emails sent and received every day. In the United States alone, more than 162 million people are part of the civilian workforce. And partly in response to the pandemic, millions of people are departing this professional workforce as part of The Great Resignation.

Isn’t this staggering? And in all this, there are so many things we should talk about — so let’s talk about them!

Let’s talk about emails, meetings, and communication. Let’s talk about organizational culture and growth. Let’s talk about management and leadership… or how the two are sometimes conflated.

Let’s talk about all the things that happen (or should happen) inside the office walls — and even outside the office walls.

Consider Other Duties Assigned a living, breathing handbook on how to build better work for people who care, from people who care.

We are a community that comes from all walks of work life: office jobs, retail, military, healthcare, and beyond. We write about work because we know about work. We live it every day and our experiences are meant to make work better — for ourselves and others.

New in 2022: The ODA community is now on Slack! Writers are invited to join us there to talk through challenges and opportunities, all in an effort to make work better.

We’re excited you are here. And thanks for sharing these stories.
