Dear Iowans, Trump is the reason you should caucus

“Everybody loves me.”

“I love women”

“I will build a wall”

Is this a joke? Well Donald, I do not love you. And you do not love women, especially with your bigoted and bully-ish tendencies to pick on everything weak. Oh, and by the way, building a “big wall” on our southern border might not keep your neighbor friends away when they navigate the border through underground tunnels — did you ever think of that? (AP reported these tunnels even have underground train routes) Not to mention it will cost a fortune, 1 mile of the wall costs 2.8–3.4 million dollars according to the Government Accountability Office- this wall will be 2,000 miles long. But Trump doesn’t care, and neither do his supporters.

Recently, I went to a Donald Trump rally. It was probably one of the most deflating things I have done in the search for ‘my’ presidential candidate. (Not that I would ever support Trump) I couldn’t believe that there were so many people who were supporting this man and his outlandish personality. But the people who support Donald Trump do not care. They love everything about the man, because he “says it like it is”. He must be right because he says he is never wrong. Donald Trump is like that bad boy, cool kid in high school. His followers want to worship his every line, his every word. If you think I’m exaggerating, please go to the next Trump event in Iowa. It is eery. Trump supporters are angry. They are the marginalized, and Trump knows exactly the rhetoric he touts is what his supporters want to hear.

The true Trump supporters don’t care about political correctness, because they say the same bigoted things that Trump gets criticized for. From my experience at rallies and Republican events, Trump supporters are a combination of the people who are rough around the edges, and work very hard at their blue-collar jobs. They are veterans who have felt ignored, and the retired individuals who long for the Reagan years. They are the uber wealthy, those who are sick and tired of getting blamed for inequality. We can’t ignore these people, they deserve a part in the political process. Their anger is valid, but I have such a hard time understanding how these people blindly follow a man who only praises the strong, who bullies those less fortunate, and paints the press as an angry mob.

Donald Trump lacks empathy, he never seeks to understand other viewpoints. Trump lacks stability, he can’t be criticized without retaliating. Trump doesn’t have what it takes to be president.

His empty rhetoric and hateful speech will not get him the Oval office. Nominating Trump for the Republican ticket will be a mistake, he will not win the general election. Many of the Trump supporters will caucus for him because they feel like Trump is their last resort, an avenue for their anger. This is why the Iowa Caucus matters. If Trump doesn’t win Iowa, he will look like a loser. And in Trump’s eyes, if you’re not first, you’re last. Trump losing in the Iowa Caucus will beat the man at his own game. He can deny polls and scream bias, but he cannot deny the people. We have a very important role to play, Iowa. I sure hope that we withstand the challenge.
