As campaigners, we are lighting a fire under Ottumwa this week! Even now, I am writing this quickly, so I can start call banking and inviting everyone to Bernie’s Town Hall Meeting in Ottumwa, IA! Many in our area are already “Feelin the Bern” and are looking forward to hearing Senator Bernie Sanders speak in person. Of course his local supporters will be first in line, but I’ve already heard about many undecided and even registered Republicans who plan on attending. As a server, and with my ear to the ground, I’m excited to think of the large crowd we’re going to rally on his behalf.

This is actually the Senator’s second time coming to Ottumwa. The first time was back in September, for the opening of our local campaign office. Originally planned as a small office opening, with just staff and volunteers. Well even that early on in the campaign, people in SE Iowa were interested enough to crowd our little office to the max! Ottumwan’s spilled out on the sidewalk, and into the street. Bernie came through, giving a great speech on income inequality, and the current problems we face not only nationally but also locally. Before leaving town, he was gracious and took the time to meet many faces, answer questions and take a few selfies with supporters. As the Senator’s designated “water bottle holder”, I had a chance to really witness how real and genuine he truly is.

With this next Town Hall Meeting at the Ottumwa Bridge View Center, we will be prepared for whatever kind of attendance we pull. Who doesn’t want to hear about bringing democracy back to this country? No matter the party, many must admit that at times Bernie’s message surpasses what divides the red and blues. It seems to me that he has also shifted politics. Within this election, he has proven he doesn’t need to be backed by the establishment and super PACs to run a competitive campaign. With record breaking contributions from over 2million individual donations, the Senator has shown that. With a universal message, which speaks to most Americans willing to listen, he gives hope to so many disheartened by a corrupt and unfair system. Senator Sanders has also given voice to those silenced, and works hard to encourage ALL American’s to get involved, become informed, get involved, and participate in the political process. In case you can’t tell, I’m kind of excited for Ottumwa! Happy Holidays everyone!
