Which style of laptop bag should you choose?

A laptop bag or laptop case is not only vital to protect your laptop and help you carry around all your other paper work etc., it can also be a style statement. I wouldn’t dream of turning up to a meeting in a ripped suit or with a stained shirt, however, I often see people, who are otherwise trying to portray a business like appearance, carrying a tatty old laptop bag (frayed Velcro and straps held together with zip ties anyone?!).

If you’re an employer who provides employees with a laptop to use, then it is important to provide a suitable bag to carry it around in to ensure the laptops are protected and your employees are presenting the right image.

Laptop Bag Styles

From laptop sleeves to messenger bags to backpacks to rolling bags, you’ve got a lot of bag styles to choose from. Each has advantages and presents a different image.

Here’s a brief overview of different styles:-

Laptop Sleeves

Laptop sleeves are a snug fit for your laptop and are useful when you want to carry your laptop in another bag that lacks padding. On their own, these sleeves or cases can also be used to carry your laptop securely within your office or from room to room.

Briefcase-style Laptop Bags and Shoulder Bags

Briefcase laptop bags and shoulder bags are designed for carrying on one shoulder or by the handles, although you could use some shoulder bags in cross-body fashion. These bags tend to be lightweight and compact, and can be very professional and traditional. The design, materials used and additional features can vary greatly and as such, they are available in a wide range of prices. Briefcases and shoulder bags offer more organization features than just a laptop sleeve. Look for padded handles or straps, compartments on the outside or inside for your small items, and room for your papers.

Backpack Laptop Bags

Backpacks are a casual, comfortable way to carry your laptop as well as your other mobile gear. They’re great for travellers, students, and city dwellers who need to manoeuvre easily. Those who cycle, walk or travel on a busy Tube or train for example. The shoulder straps distribute the weight evenly and keep your hands free. Look for padded, adjustable straps, and a padded section or removable sleeve for your laptop.

However, because they are quite casual, they may not portray the right image in certain circumstances and as such, a second, more formal looking bag may be required.

Messenger Bags

Messenger bags, with their cross body design, help you carry your laptop and other items ergonomically. They can be stylish and professional looking, whilst still being suitable for those commuters who may need to be “hands free”.

Rolling Laptop Bags

Rolling laptop bags take the weight off your shoulders and are great for carrying your stuff across long distances. They’re typically bulkier and heavier (thanks to the wheels) than other bags, but you can fit more in them. As such, they may be suitable for travelling by plane and can double as an overnight bag. If you’re intending to use them as a cabin bag, you need to ensure they fulfil the size and weight stipulations of the airline you are flying with.

As you can see, there are a variety of styles available and within each style, a multitude of additional options. Each style presents a different image and may be suitable for different needs. You might even need more than one so you can switch styles depending on the circumstances. After all, how many women do you know with only one handbag?!
