World’s toughest mobile phones

If you’re reading this from your mobile, the gadget you’re holding now is most likely a shiny 4-incher (at least) that has all the bells and whistles that Android, iOS and Windows can offer. But will it survive a hard collision with concrete, being splashed by a cup of coffee knocked over on your desk, or being left alone in the cold as you go camping?

There are already a number of smartphones that can withstand significant exposure to liquids, dust, extreme temperatures, shock and pressure, but they can set you back several hundred quid and you’d have to trade off many of its hi-tech features for a rugged exterior. However that is a compromise its intended users are willing to take. After all, would you really bring a phone to construction sites and calamity-battered areas just so you can confirm ‘friend’ requests and take selfies?

On with the list of mobile toughies then.

  • JCB ToughPhone series. Known for their yellow beasts designed to battle an entire landscape, they have decided to expand to consumer products still made with the same heavy duty capabilities their agriculture and construction machineries are made of. One of their offerings is the JCB Toughphone Sitemaster, a small yet no-nonsense device that withstands up to a tonne of pressure, drops of up to 2 metres, and exposure to dust and water. It’s 200-hour standby time and 270-hour talk time makes it ideal to be tagged along when you’re on site for several successive days and can’t be bothered with something as mundane as charging your phone battery.

Others in the Toughphone line include the Motorola DEFY + JCB and the ToughPhone Pro-Smart.

  • Sonim XP3300 Force. It once claimed the title “the world’s toughest phone” in 2012 and rightly so. The Guinness World Records themselves confirmed it wasn’t reduced to a useless brick after a twelve-storey fall. Say, if Superman had to choose his mobile phone partner (I don’t see a pocket anywhere in that skintight suit or cape) wouldn’t it be this?
  • DSS Rugged Outdoor. If you’re more inclined to communing with nature rather than wearing a tie and hard hat this may well be your most ideal pocket BFF. It’s coated in waterproof rubber and has strategically placed shock absorbers that will protect it should it tumble down a not-so-friendly crevice. It also cuts background noise so you can still clearly say sweet nothings to the wife even whilst on a Three Peaks Challenge, and its SOS button that can be programmed to dial 999 in one touch is very handy should things go wrong on these outdoor jaunts. Just no camera though. Then again, that’s when a GoPro comes in, yeah?
