During our first year, Our Human Family (OHF) has published nonfiction articles focused on a simple concept: once you see someone as human, you can never unsee their humanity. In a word, our stories are about: equality. It’s baked into everything we publish. We share our writers’ firsthand adventures and views to help readers understand that while not everyone experiences the world the same way, whether we live in New York City, New Mexico, or New Zealand, all that we have in common far outweighs and transcends our perceived differences.

We look past the bravado and hubris and present how we got to where we are. Doing so reveals people’s similarities, those fears and longings common to humans just about everywhere. Regardless of our race, gender, political affiliation, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, physical ability, or age, we all want the same things: to be accepted, understood, and loved.

Read: “Inclusion > Diversity

This year we decided it was time to shake things up a little by publishing a special issue that explores our ethos via poetry—and “Equal People: The Poetry Edition” was born. Beginning today and continuing through Sunday, May 24, we’ll share poetry about equality and inclusion by an international slate of beloved Medium poets, budding elegists, and breakout bards.

“Equal People” kicks off with a lyrical essay on the power of poetry by Bronx performer, author, storyteller, and TED Talks speaker, Joel Leon. And be sure to join us for an Instagram Live interview with Joel about his essay, equality, and poetry Friday, May 15, at 6:00 p.m.

We invite you to take a little time from all the busy-ness to rejuvenate with an inspirational poem or two each day, and affirm our vision of mutual humanity in a world filled with equal people.

Love one another.
