Although it may smell like cigarettes, pee, and sometimes cannabis, the Fruitvale BART Station is a necessity for Oakland and its community. Many schools use BART transportation for their field trips, many people use it to get to work, and lots of parents use BART to go places with their children.

Just going to a corner of the BART station, stepping out of the whole building and seeing the portrait of Oscar Grant could make one think to themselves, “How much history does this building hold?”

Everyday there’s so many different types of people who walk in and out, that’s why it’s so dirty. Many people treat the station horribly. There are many stains, lots of people spitting everywhere, cigarette butts on the ground; it is disgusting. It’s been that way for a very long time, but it’s not completely bad. It adds character to the building.

Around the sides of the building there are always people selling things. Usually people sell food, flowers, clothes and much more.Every day, the same lady is selling plants and such. She greets people and has conversations with them as if they are close friends. Her doing so helps represent the community and its friendliness. Of course, that isn’t all of the community. Of course, just like every other community, the Oakland community isn’t always its best; the BART station really shows that. Lots of people frequently hop over the little keycard gates and get away with it, but that isn’t too much of BART’s fault.

Basically, what I’m saying is that the Fruitvale BART Station is a big, important part of the Oakland and Fruitvale community. Yes, it has its pros and cons, but everywhere and everyone does too.
