How Young Is Too Young To Use Social Media?
How old should you be to use social media? Some people say at 13 years old you can use social media, but other people say it is much better to use social media at 16 years old because kids’ brains can dangerously get alerted because they are not finished developing. So who’s correct? Let’s find out.
According to Healthline, a medical website, brains are not developed until age 25. Brains can function differently for young people and can be vulnerable during their teens. According to an article on Wikipedia about the movie The Social Dilemma, social media can make kids stop doing their schoolwork and engaging in the real world. Another example is that social media can be dangerous for mental health by provoking anxiety, fear, loneliness, and depression.
Social media can be dangerous for younger people, so when they use social media they should limit their time spent on it to 30 minutes a day. They might think it’s a small amount of time, but some kids aren’t ready to use social media. Some more things that happen on social media are bad people who discriminate, people who give out hate speeches, cyberbullying that may lower a social media user’s self esteem, and promoting self-harm.
Some parents would say that social media is good and may start to pressure other parents to get their kids phones so the kids can then get social media apps, and so they could make more friends online.
All in all, having an active social media account may result in doing more harm than good. Just because your friends have social media doesn’t mean that you need to have it too.
