shopping for skincare

Diving into the world of skincare can be a little overwhelming and one of the bug steps is shopping for skincare.

Skincare aisles can be scary with the unending amount of things to buy and shopping online may be even more daunting.

Here are a few tips to help you on your skincare shopping journey.

1. Make a budget: having so many options can pressure you into buying just about anything you lay your hands upon, and soon you would find that you have overspent on skincare items you are not even sure you need.

Just like with almost any other shopping trip, it is important you start with a budget. This would help you streamline your shopping because you know you are not going beyond a certain limit. It will also help you curb waste, financially and product wise.

2. Shop for your skin type: it is very important to know your skin type. Many products are formulated with a particular kind of skin in the mind of the producer, and you may not get the best results from a product that is not best suited for your skin type.

There are major skin categories that a person would usually fall into: dry, normal, oily and in some cases sensitive skin.

Once you know your skin type be sure to buy products suited for your skin type.

3. Shop for your skin concerns: a good question to always ask yourself is “what skin issue am I trying to address?” Is it acne? Hyperpigmentation? Dryness?

Knowing what skin concerns you are trying to target will highly influence the kind of products you are buying.

You should not be buying products that target and issue you are not dealing with.

Always make sure a product has an ingredient list

4. Make sure the product has an ingredient list: this is very important. There are actually very dodgy products out there and one way to easily spot them is a lack of an ingredient list.

An ingredient list goes a great way to show accountability of the brand and will help you have an idea of what you are about to put on your skin.

By checking out ingredient lists you will know to avoid ingredients you may have allergies or other aversions to. It can also help you validate what the claims of a product are, such as where a product is advertised as containing a certain ingredient but such ingredient cannot be found on the ingredient list of that product.

5. Read reviews: this goes a long way in giving you an idea of how a product might perform on you.

You would also get information on how the packaging performs. How to store the product. What it may look like in real time when delivered, etc.

Reviews can go a long way in helping you purchase that wonder product or keeping you away from a bad purchase.

6. Get a sample size first: it’s your first time purchasing a product so you might want to test it out first before you properly invest. A good way to do this is to grab sample sized products and use them to get a feel of how the product performs before buying the full size.

This is also perfect if you like to try out new products a lot.

Always make sure to read the labelling on products to know what they do.

7. Read the labelling on the product before you buy: I have many a time gotten home to realize I bought a makeup remover instead of a cleanser or micellar water instead of a toner all because I didn’t patiently read what the product was while in the store.

the way brands label their products can sometimes be misleading so take your time and read the fine print.

Except you are very familiar with a product, read it very well before you toss it into your shopping cart and avoid regrets later.

A skincare product can last a while and also leave positive or negative results in the long or short term, so it is a investment to take time with.
