The popular Shalimar Bagh/garden

Shalimar Bagh is a Mughal garden in Srinagar, linked through a channel to the northeast of Dal Lake, on its right bank It is on the outskirts of Srinagar Kashmir, India. The garden was built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his wife Noor Jahan, in 1619.

He made it a royal garden and Zafar Khan the governor of Kashmir extended it.

Later Maharaja Ranjit Singh made it as a guest house for European visitors. The garden was extended and improved by many rulers

The Moghul Emperor Jahangir and his wife Nur Jahan were so fond of Kashmir that during summer they moved to Srinagar with their full court from Delhi many times.

As we entered the garden we were greeted by fountains.

This is now also called a love garden and a family garden. On Saturdays and Sundays, it is full of people and the guide told us that many couples date there and ultimately get married. Families come with their children for picnics.

The layout of the garden is on an Islamic pattern like the Persian gardens. This garden is built on flat land on a square plan
