I’ve always loved dogs. For as long as I could remember, we’ve always had dogs or cats, sometimes both, although we ended up being mostly a dog family. The first dogs I remember having were my dad’s hunting dogs, beagles. They lived outside in a pen.

Then we had a little black mutt named Sam who was a house dog who liked to roam the neighborhood in search of his girlfriend, Candy, a beautiful Maltese who was the target of many amorous dogs in a three-block radius.

But it was a series of books I read in junior high by Albert Payson Terhune about his collie named Lad that cemented my love for dogs in general; they really gave me a passion for the collie breed. Cooper is the third collie that I’ve had.

He is a very happy dog, with an expressive face. But he’s the happiest when he discovers a stick he deems worthy of his attention, at which point he prances around proudly and, if off leash, will engage in a game of keepaway — him keeping the stick away from me—creating great photo ops.
