In June 1985 I was 22 years old. It was the first time I traveled this far, solo. The first time I bought my plane tickets, rented a car and spent a week alone. Oh, and I packed 13 rolls of 36-exposure film for my Minolta XG-1.

Well, not entirely alone. I stayed with relatives in South Lake Tahoe and Truckee. But, they worked and I had my days to myself.

As a family, we had visited the area a few times because my mom’s brother lived in Truckee and my dad’s brother lived in South Lake Tahoe. I fell in love with it then. The incredible blue skies, the smell of the pine and the whispering winds through those pines, all profoundly stuck with me.

One of the days my uncle Ole (his real name was Kenton), called up a friend of his who had a boat. We spent much of the day cruising around Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay.
