The Prime Minister’s House, Chequers — Photo by author © Scribbling Lion

Cadsden in Buckinghamshire is an area of woodland and wilderness. It backs onto Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country residence.

I visit this beautiful country location regularly, following a muddy footpath to a spot on a hill where it’s quiet and peaceful — I feel at one with nature there.

During a period of downheartedness in my youth, I used to go there frequently to get away from the stresses of life. The moment I stepped through the gate onto the open hillside, a sense of calm and serenity came over me.

No one else would come down that way as most passers by stuck to the main path, so it was just me and the rabbits.

It is close to the Ridgeway path, which continues past Whiteleaf Cross nearby, and then to Avebury Henge in Wiltshire.

Pilgrims would have traveled along the Ridgeway through Cadsden, to visit places of ceremonial importance.

To me, the silence and beauty of the wildflowers is humbling. The rustlings of evasive wildlife and occasional molehills, provide a oneness with nature. I consider this place to be my sanctuary away from the demands of modern society.

It has a real feeling of spiritual presence and peacefulness.
