Our Beginnings

A Journey Through the Roots

Our Roots is a project dedicated to revolutionizing urban farming by deploying turn key agricultural solutions to communities around the world. There are four humans behind the project who came together in the most unlikely of circumstances. We will get into this more later, but for now let’s just say the universe has it’s way of making exciting connections.

The current state of agriculture and food production is quite depressing. People go to the supermarket and acquire food that much of the time was grown in other countries, then packaged and distributed by large corporations. We walk into our grocery stores and consume whatever is presented. There is no love in this process. There is no sustainability in this process, except for the large corporate entities. We believe that this is an archaic paradigm, and ripe for change.

Food is an essential part of life. It should be a joyful process to be a part of a community working together to create sustainable conditions for themselves and everyone around them. We are making this a reality across the entire spectrum of geographic and climate conditions through Our Roots.

It is 2017 and we live in a world where many people on our planet don’t have access to healthy produce. This is unacceptable. By combining the latest advancements in hydroponic farming and blockchain technologies, we can completely avoid the current power structures and create our own distributed agricultural network.

Our Story

Forbes Danckwerts, the mastermind behind Our Roots was born in Zimbabwe. He lived on a farm the majority of his life, and recently moved to Boulder, CO to attend school at both Naropa University and Watson. The idea for Our Roots is the manifestation of a solution to all of the challenges people in his home country, and around the world, are facing related to growing vibrant produce.

Us

In Boulder, he met two of the other team members at Our Roots. Garrett MacDonald, a cryptocurrency mining expert and general blockchain enthusiast, came on board after realizing the potential behind Forbes’s concept and introducing the potential of a blockchain component. Jaq Poussot, a master team builder, student at Naropa University, and interpersonal psychology genius, came on board to manage operations and design the structure of our company’s workflow.

Then one day in early 2017, Garrett and Forbes were in Acapulco, attending an anarchy conference cleverly named Anarchapulco where they met the fourth team member, Jake Vartanian, who was attending the conference because of the relationship between anarchy and cryptocurrency (and because Acapulco is awesome). Jake immediately connected with the project on a personal level, and thought about how cool it would be to design a digital token model around community supported agriculture.

About a month after the conference, the team reconnected in Boulder, CO and began architecting the next phases of the project.

Our Ethics

This brings us to Our Ethics, which lies at the foundation of everything we do. Although we need to survive, our motivation is not purely profit, which unfortunately seems to be the case with so many companies acting in these capitalist structures. Ultimately we know that:

1. We are always provided for
2. We are always exactly where we are supposed to be
3. Desiring more than what is in front of us and being exploitative at someone else’s expense is an ego problem
4. Doing the most good for everyone is, in the end, benefitting us as well — in other words, we aren’t separate

So, the team gathered to solidify an interpersonal connection and understand each other on a deeper level. Here are some of the outcomes from our meeting that is at the essence of how our company functions:

We started with a few key topics that we feel are important to our core. Some of the most essential topics included “non-harming” and “abundance”. Creating a sustainable world begins with providing everyone the tools that they need to feel stable in their being. Participation in a community through our Community Supported Agriculture model is a great start.

Our Vision

We envision a world where every human being has sustainable and abundant access to produce that is grown locally, containing the economic cycle and benefitting only those who need to be involved in the process. Gone are the days of extortion due to lack of infrastructure and inaccessibility.

We are only just getting started and hope that you will join us in our mission to revolutionize urban farming!
