#myNorm: Community — Can we use the global goals to create a more inclusive global community?

norm has always been about trying to reimagine community. Initially, the platform was called CommUni (universal community). Then, for some reason Commogri seemed like a good idea (Community + transmogrify = ‘community transformed’). While the name has changed, we’ve always been set on helping the world feel more like one community.

A community is often used to divide people into smaller groups based on shared characteristics (race, religion, occupation, nationality, zip code, etc). With norm, we want everyone’s desire to achieve any one of the global goals as a shared characteristic to lump humanity into one, constructive, community.

We ask “What’s your norm?” so every person can share their unique perspective on how they would like to support their favorite global goal. With every person empowered to help define our global community, we hope everyone can gain a shared sense of ownership over the world. At that point, the idea of sustainability will be more important to everyone…leading to more constructive solutions.

My perspective of why reimagining the definition of our community is just as important as addressing its sustainability. (Global Goal 11 was developed as a part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We centered norm around these goals after reading Issue 05 of CONSCIOUS Magazine)
