MACON- Nicknamed as the “Heart of Georgia,” Macon is recognized for its soul food, historic ties to blues and rock and roll and for convenient location to Atlanta and Savannah. Founded in 1823, Macon’s current claim to fame is being the hometown of Jason Aldean however, the city is now making waves for a unique and economically conscious revitalization of Section 8 and low-income housing.

As the city of Macon undergoes a significant revitalization and restoration program for downtown and surrounding areas, developers are also remaining conscious of low-income residents who are important member of the Macon community and are creating new residential properties for those citizens.

“The Macon-Bibb County Housing Authority wants to continue to develop affordable housing, there’s an obvious need for it within the county so we want to continue fulfilling those needs,” Macon-Bibb County Housing Authority Executive Director Mike Austin said.

Currently, MHA owns and operates over 2,000 public housing units within the county and are continuing their efforts to revitalize and develop new properties to enhance Macon.

“Everybody makes up the fabric of a community… a community is stronger when you have more diversity,” Austin said.

One of the newest public housing facilities is A.L. Miller Village, located on Montpelier Avenue. With one- to three-bedroom apartments, this property has a diverse community ranging from young families to elderly residents. Amenities such as a playground, laundry facility and private parking are included within the facility.

“ I believe that A.L. Miller means a good bit to the community, not only is it a historical monument… it has put the community in a different light and has given a really great housing opportunity to people who may not always get the opportunity to live somewhere like this,” A.L. Miller Property Manager Christy Evans said.

Macon has continued to invest its efforts in not only renovating the city but also in ensuring that all residents of the community have a place to call home. Through new properties such as A.L. Miller, Tindall Heights Senior Living Community and Tattnall Place Apartments, Macon is securing a spot in its revitalization efforts for people of all demographics and backgrounds.
