  1. Trail runners or running shoes

You don’t have to run to get into hiking shape. I would much rather you hike than run all the time. However, some people prefer that over walking for an hour. Whether you are running or walking during your week, having a pair of training shoes is ideal, so you don’t completely wear out your hiking boots/shoes.

2. Water bottle

Hydration! Hydration! Hydration! I hope I don’t have to really get into why this is important.

3. Watch

Nothing fancy, just something that has a timer and stopwatch. You can even use your phone if you like. I use a Garmin watch but use what you have. Focus on getting started, not the fancy equipment.

4. Backpack

Rucking and hiking with a pack will toughen your back and get used to carrying weight around. Also, you can use your bag as a tool for resistance training.

5. Pull up bar

If you’re planning on carrying a backpack and trekking poles, you need a strong back to build up the endurance. I know some people might not own one but there are parks and public areas that have them available or you can look at Facebook market place or craigslist for a used one.

6. Workout bands/dumbbells/weights

Some form of resistance is what I’m saying. I’ll be using all different types, but you only need one of the following. Heck, you could use a backpack with blankets and books.

7. Yoga mat

Stretching is essential, but mainly I put this down, so you have a better grip on the floor. Plus, it helps with the clean up after the workout.

8. Documentation

Most people are fueled with improvement. It’s also fun to watch how strong you’ve become over the next months. I’m writing all my workouts here for others but mainly myself to see improvements.

9. Discipline

Look, you use motivation to start and discipline to continue. There are going to be good days and bad days. Use your regimen to keep you on track for the bad days.

10. Support system

Whether it’s a workout buddy, accountability partner, friends and family to route you on, or a forum online. You need to surround yourself with people who push you to be better and achieve your goals.

Optional Helpful tools:

  1. TRX Bands
  2. Gym membership
  3. Foam roller
