The social network technologies are unarguably one of the greatest triumphs of the digital age. It changes the way we communicate. Distance were made irrelevant. New knowledge is now delivered like the speed of light. Gateways of opportunities were vastly opened. And the world feels smaller and smaller.

While digital social networking improves certain aspects of life, it forges catastrophic cultures that endangers humanity as well.

Culture of Openness

Highly effective social media are behavioral science wizards. It was able to influence and eventually change our sense of disclosure. For example, previously it takes huge effort to get somebody’s landline number. Now, you can easily know highly sensitive information like private videos, bank accounts, airplane flight codes, etc. People voluntarily open themselves even when not asked to.

The word open is very welcoming. People open to lend a hand. People open for suggestions. But people are now open to abuse as well. Privacy infringement is a norm today. Most do not know or just ignore it. Others use it to take advantage. As we share more personal information, the more we expose ourselves to harm.

Celebrity Culture

It looks like almost everyone wants to be celebrities nowadays. We love to be followed and gather the most likes. Accept so much friends even strangers. Show our care and support through comments. In person, we don’t even talk or tap a shoulder. We keep on dropping our head and we skip conversations.

How’s our home nowadays? Parents and children individually post happy selfies while not talking in living rooms. Everyone faces on their phone screens without a word, just a #FamilyTime on their updates. We’re living the celebrity life. Two different faces of ironic characters. It’s disastrous that we care more about our digital image than real connections.

Culture of Laziness

Technology provides convenience, which also means, it promotes laziness. As we get immersed into the technology, we want to do almost everything by looking at the screen, clicking & typing. This inactivity diminishes real life interaction. A culture of slacking emerged. Social media inactivity and demanding work environment could be the most fatal combination in today’s society. Heart attack and cancer of all sorts have surged.
