First is a darkly comic satire of the New York lit scene. Philip, a successful but self-absorbed writer, is anxiously awaiting the publication of his second novel. Narcissism is the villain in this sharp artist’s tale starring Jason Schwartzman and Elisabeth Moss.
As much a movie about Paris as New York, this dreamy classic finds Audrey Hepburn in “a sinister place in Greenwich Village” (a bookstore). The Hollywood effect is over-the-top and delightful, if that’s the shade of New York you like to see.
Set in the 1870s New York, a distraught Countess faces scrutiny as she falls in love with a man who is set to marry another woman. Although based on an Edith Wharton novel, Martin Scorsese considers this his most violent film, suggesting that emotional anguish eclipses physical violence.
If you’re less interested in glitz and high society, this pick shows the island of Manhattan as a maximum-security prison. The inmates have captured the President, and Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) has 22 hours to find him.
Our final selection parodies “New York being another character” in this total takedown of rom-com clichés. Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler don’t disappoint, putting real laughs in the laughably predictable premise.
