A Fistful of Dynamite

‘A Fistful of Dynamite’ (MGM)

We start this list off with a classic, quirky, and criminally underseen Western from Sergio Leone. An Irish soldier of fortune with a knack for explosives joins up with a Mexican bandit to blow up a bank. Rod Steiger and James Coburn are in peak form in this Zapata Western set during the Mexican Revolution of 1910 that includes a glorious score by Ennio Morricone.

Tyson

‘Tyson’ (Sony)

Is Mike Tyson one of the best athletes and boxers of all time? For sure, but he’s also one of the most controversial. Here’s the story of Tyson in his own words. Director James Toback takes a completely subjective perspective of Tyson’s life, and lets the man speak candidly and damningly, with powerful results.

Shane

‘Shane’ (Paramount)

Here’s a film that elevates the Western to a work of art. Alan Ladd is Shane, a mysterious drifter and reformed gunslinger who rides into a tiny community on the Wyoming range and takes a job on homesteader Joe Starrett’s farm. But his determination to avoid a fight is tested when greedy cattle barons attempt to drive Shane’s adopted farming family out of town.

Paths of Glory

‘Paths of Glory’ (MGM)

This early Kubrick film takes a long hard look at the cost and terror of war. Colonel Dax is given the impossible task of advancing his petrified men to certain death across enemy lines. Facing execution, three of his men are scapegoated for mutiny and cowardice and Colonel Dax must make a plea for their innocence before a military tribunal. Director Stanley Kubrick and star Kirk Douglas would reunite three years later for Spartacus.

Infernal Affairs

‘Infernal Affairs’ (Miramax)

Brace yourself for one of the most tense crime films we’ve ever seen. In this beautifully crafted Chinese crime thriller, two men go deep undercover: A fresh-faced Mafioso becomes a policeman, while a young cop infiltrates the mob. Ten years later, with the psychological pressures of living a lie for so long starting to wear on them, each is unknowingly assigned by their superiors to find the traitor in their midst — to find themselves, that is. This is the film Scorsese remade into The Departed, but this Chinese original may be even more gripping.
