Each week here at Tribeca Shortlist we like to highlight some of the movies that you won’t find streaming anywhere else. Last week we offered up some ‘tough guy’ movies to enjoy with Dad on Father’s Day, and this week we’re looking at some other charismatic leading men and women in films that showcase their ‘star-quality’.

Cold Mountain

Cold Mountain (Miramax)

Start off with this epic Civil War romance with recently-minted TV stars Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies) and Jude Law (The Young Pope), not to mention Renée Zellweger with an Academy Award®-winning supporting performance. Jack White (The White Stripes) also has a small role, if that’s the kind of star you’re into.

Funny Face

Funny Face (Paramount)

Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire are shown in their full, fashionable glory in this delightful feast for the eyes. Photographer Dick Avery (Astaire) discovers a “new face,” wide-eyed Greenwich Village bookstore clerk, Jo (Hepburn, who does her own singing). She becomes the sensation of the Paris fashion scene, and it’s easy to see why in costumes by legends Edith Head and Hubert de Givenchy.

The Caine Mutiny

The Caine Mutiny (Sony)

Humphrey Bogart’s range of talent is in full force here, with an Academy Award® nomination for this leading role as a war-weary and paranoid World War II navy captain, whose eventual mistakes lead to an onboard mutiny. While it’s not Bogey’s best-known performance, it reminds the casual or committed cinephile about the talent that made the icon.

Thelma and Louise

Thelma and Louise (MGM)

Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon slay in this perfect road movie. Frustrated with her evasive boyfriend, Louise (Sarandon) convinces her housewife friend Thelma (Davis) to have a weekend away. Their road trip changes tone when Louise shoots a man who attempted to rape Thelma, forcing them to drive away on the run. A stunning depiction of the power of female friendship, it also boasts Brad Pitt’s screen introduction to the world.

Pierrot Le Fou

Pierrot Le Fou (Lionsgate)

Anna Karina and Jean-Paul Belmondo are two of the faces that have the status of standing in for a movement. The French New Wave peaks in entertainment with this classic, colorful Godard film. Ferdinand (Belmondo) leaves his wife, runs off with the babysitter (Karina), and steals cars in cinema’s most stylish runaway from a band of crooks.
