We know that it’s hard to imagine doing anything noteworthy on a weeknight, but #MoviesUnder90 can guide you to movies so great, you probably didn’t think you had time to watch them. We highlight a new film every week that can be checked off your “I should see that” list in under 90 minutes.

This is Spinal Tap (Lionsgate)

This week’s pick for #MoviesUnder90 is the cult classic This is Spinal Tap streaming on Tribeca Shortlist but not currently on Netflix or Hulu.

Few films balance affection, critique and joy like This is Spinal Tap (1984), making it one of those rare comedies that can truly be categorized as a “must see.” Aside from its status as a towering cult classic, its brand of deadpan humor still shines in its rock music mockumentary package.

Following the fictional British heavy metal band Spinal Tap, the movie satirizes both the ludicrous behavior of popular musicians and the incongruous seriousness with which they were being portrayed in documentary conventions of the time. As it shows the band (friends since their 1960s childhood) age and evolve, the movie also conveys the feel of the industry and popular sound changing in a more real way.

The density of subtly delivered jokes respects and rewards the audience’s attention. This is Spinal Tap reminds us that the best comedies may be informed by characters we’re familiar with, but stands out by having a clear voice of its own.
