Our much-loved mobile brand Nokia has returned and how! The once-exemplary smartphone brand is back in business, all thanks to the Finnish startup HMD. HMD has signed a 10-year deal to stick the Nokia name on smartphones and tablets, and the Nokia 6 is the current top dog in its initial lineup of four devices. HMD Global Oy, branded as simply HMD, is a Finnish company affiliated with Nokia. Operating since December 2016, the firm develops and markets smartphones and feature phones under the “Nokia” brand name. Nokia’s trio of new Android smartphones (the fourth is a feature phone 3310 reboot) was launched at MWC 2017 with a focus on a premium build, simple UI, and affordable price tags.

Design and display

Nokia has had a reputation for making rugged phones, and that tradition continues with Nokia’s latest Android smartphone. While we still haven’t decided if we want to drop the phone under a bus to test durability, it certainly feels more sturdy than the most Android phones. It is constructed from a solid block of aluminium, with the edges rounded off using a diamond cutting technique. Nokia 6 is crafted from a single block of aluminium, and the result is a phone which feels far superior than its budget price tag. There is a reassuring weight to the handset, and while its 154 x 75.8 x 7.85 mm dimensions make it a sizable presence in hand, it is still very convenient to use. The standard Nokia 6 is available in four stark colours — silver, copper, matte black and tempered blue, and a glossy Arte Black special edition. The large 5.5-inch Full HD display is bright and clear. It means video playback and gaming should look really good on the Nokia 6, with plenty of space for on-screen controls.

Interface, performance, and storage

Consumers seeking pure Android will be happy here. The Nokia 6 runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat. There’s no clunky overlay and no pre-installed bloatware. Nokia has opted to stick with the stock Android interface, and it’s a choice all of us will be happy with. It makes the Nokia 6 easy to navigate, and also promises smooth performance. There’s a Snapdragon 430 processor under the hood along with 3GB of RAM (or 4GB if you opt for the Arte Black edition), which provides more than enough power for general usage and the camera. If the 32GB of space inside the new Nokia 6 isn’t enough (although for many that’s unlikely), there’s a microSD slot too, which supports cards up to 128GB.

Battery life and camera

The Nokia 6 comes with a non-removable 3,000mAh battery which should see out a day on a single charge with general usage. The camera feature is where the Nokia 6 gets interesting, at least for die-hard fans who’ve been following the Nokia 6 since it was released in China. Nokia has decided to bump up the specs of the front-facing camera to 8 megapixels, which is quite high for a phone in this price bracket. It’s also got a wide-angle lens, so you better have plenty of friends to fit into those selfie shots! At the back of the phone sits a well-equipped 16MP camera that offers HDR and a dual-tone LED, aperture f / 2.0, and Phase Detection Autofocus that helps you take natural-looking photos, even in low light.

Fast fingerprint and stereo speakers

Following the current smartphone trend, Nokia 6 is using the fast fingerprint as mobile security. The fingerprint feature is already integrated into its home button so that users can quickly unlock the smartphone. With Nokia 6’s dual speakers and dedicated amplifier, you get loud sound, deep bass, and excellent clarity. The smartphone comes with certified Dolby Atmos® sound. Another salient reason for you to buy the Nokia.

Nostalgia

“The Grandmaster of gaming and good old snakes is back!” We have the fondest memories of Nokia phones. The sort-of cumbersome, brick-like phones were uncomplicated and indestructible. If the rest of the specs of the Nokia 6 doesn’t win you over, the age-old Snake game surely will.
