One of the absolute best meals you can prepare for a camping trip is an in-campfire dinner. Not only do these make for one of the easiest meals to prepare and actually cook while out in the field, but it can hands-down be one of the most fulfilling and tastiest. It’s also saves time and mess while you’re out in the field.

Basically an in-campfire dinner is just that — a meal that cooks INSIDE the campfire. If you want to get technical, though, it’s actually under the campfire. Once it’s prepared you’ll let it roast inside/under the fire until it’s ready to come out, cool, and eat right out of the foil wrapping.

Below is how we prepared the standard meat and potatoes in-campfire dinner:

1. Combine vegetables

  • Potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Red & Green Bell Peppers

2. Season ground beef and mash up by hand

3. Lay out your foil with vegetables, a little more seasoning and ground beef patties on top.

6. Wrap them in 2 layers of foil — wrap them tight! Then store them cold/in the fridge until you’re ready to go.

Note: If you’re not planning on using them for a couple days, freeze em.

7. When ready to eat, throw them directly into the center, UNDER the fire and let them cook for about 20–30min.

Don’t worry it’s hard to overcook them if they’re wrapped well.

WARNING: Be careful as it can be dangerous moving fire/coals around and putting the meals inside.

Pro tip: We use a shovel to move the logs apart, scoop some coals aside, and then drop the dinners in the center. Then we cover them with coals and put the logs back over letting the fire build up while they cook underneath.

8. When they’re ready, let them cool a few minutes and peel them apart and eat right out of foil.

Great when paired with all the fish you caught ;)
