Overwolf apps are made by developers just like you, gamers who have an idea for how their game can be made even more fun to play and the basic development skills to make it happen with Overwolf’s tools.

While some games already have full arsenals of apps for every need, Legends of Runeterra is new and still hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves… In this article we’ll review potential app concepts for LoR which you can start working on immediately.

The League of Legends card game

Legends of Runeterra is Riot’s entry into the strategic card game genre, rivaling Hearthstone and other behemoths with an engaging new formula that’s getting great initial responses. Fueled by League of Legends’ lore and showing off some beautiful art and animations, LoR is set to challenge its rivals for the love of gamers everywhere.

LoR is all about quick battles with plenty of turnarounds and surprises thrown in for extra fun. It is somewhat similar to other games in the sense that you collect cards, build decks and use them to fight others online, but it has some meaningful differences — for example, champion cards can level up through completing in-battle objectives, and the balance of power can be manipulated by experienced players to completely change the outcome of a fight.

We see a huge potential for apps making LoR even more fun to play for the millions of gamers trying it out. Needless to say, apps for new games usually do better and earn more than apps for games which already have a good selection.

Development Opportunities in Legends of Runeterra

Our product and app teams dove into the Legends of Runeterra’s beta to think up some cool ideas that you can pick up and develop right away, and we have some good ones! Check them out below, visualized using Hearthstone assets from other apps.

If you love LoR and want to take over developing one of these concepts, talk to us right away at developers@overwolf.com. Needless to say, these are our ideas created from experience with successful apps, but you are very welcome to work on your own.

Deck Tracker: Battlefield Awareness

Starting with simple concepts, a deck tracker is a way for players of Legends of Runeterra to keep an eye on the available cards in their deck while fighting. Knowing which cards remain in the deck, and what the odds of pulling them are, can assist experienced players in decision making and empower them to make optimal calls.

This is not limited to the player’s own deck, and apps tracking revealed cards from the opponent’s deck and slowly revealing his overall strategy can also be developed.

Start with the right hand: Mulligan Simulator

After building a deck, it helps if you have a way to test it out in terms of draw chances and opening hands. This tool could solve it by simulating opening hand draws and mulligans, enabling you to get a feel for how your game is going to start.

Custom Achievements: Show off some skills

Some gamers like showing off their skills and getting the credit for performing the difficult or rare. Adding a custom set of achievements and a tracking app to unlock them can give that extra satisfaction and keep them motivated to improve in the game — your creativity in thinking up cool achievements is the only limit!

One Click Deck Import

When figuring out the perfect deck, it’s pretty annoying to manually select each card separately when you just want to change up a card or two. This potential app will enable full deck importing and exporting so players can easily manage their setups, share with their friends or get a successful pro meta deck online to instantly load into their collection.

Meta Decks, Meta Cards

In card games, players have to get cards that work well together in their decks. Since crafting is often expensive and slow, choosing the right cards to fill up one’s collection can be challenging. Enter this potential Meta Decks app, showing the player current statistics and winrates for top global meta decks and showing the cards required to pull it off.

What Can I Craft?

An app that reads your resources and recommends cards you can build right now. It even shows card value, winrate, and other useful stats helping players choose the very best cards to round up their deck — and craft them in a heartbeat.

Twitch Extensions — Bringing the game online

Overwolf and Twitch’s APIs can work together to create engaging on-stream experiences. The most basic example can be showing a deck tracking list on the stream, but you can show off any statistics or features that bring viewers closer to the streamer, the game and the app’s experience.

What will you create in Legends of Runeterra?

These are just initial ideas, and you are most welcome to take them on and build these apps yourself — we’ll gladly support your work. Remember, your creativity and passion for the game are your most important assets, and we are certain you’ll have tons of cool ideas once you dig into it.

Even today, developers are making a living from Overwolf apps, with some making tens of thousands of dollars per month. With Legends of Runeterra, we believe you have a rare opportunity to get in there early and build one of the first solutions available for the game. We also offer funding for promising concepts as part of the joint Developers Fund by Intel and Overwolf.

For promising apps, Overwolf is also able to provide a full set of supporting services including QA, marketing, visual design and monetization implementation — so the creator only needs to focus on making the best possible app for LoR players to enjoy.
