Most people can agree on the fact that music has changed in the past 20 years, but has it changed for the better or worse. It depends on what “good” is to you.

There is no arguing that music has changed a lot. Just to name a few things according to an amazingly complex study done by Colin Morris ( study found here) shows that on average repetitiveness has increased by about 9% from the 1960’s to 2014 and on average songs of the same length are 22% more repetitive. In fact this is a statistical confirmation of what many people that are fans of older music (referred to as old-heads by the younger generation) say. They argue that older rap music is more lyrical and relies less on the producers than newer music. In my experience this is true, the repetitiveness of older rap music in a lyrical sense is much less noticeable than in newer songs while the back track is fairly repetitive compared to new music. While songs like Lil Pump’s Gucci Gang (2017) repeats the lyrics “Gucci gang” 49 times in 2 minutes and 4, however, that isn’t what the best part of the song is, the best part is the backing track which adds variety. This is reflective of how most songs now days work. They have uninteresting lyrics and complex backing tracks. This is in-contrast to older music, while the lyrics and rhyme scheme are very complex, the back track is usually fairly simple.

So has music progressively gotten worse? It is very dependent on what you like. If you’re more about lyrics you’ll like old music. But, if you like whats going on behind the person talking, then your more likely to like newer music
