Finding one’s style is so unique because the journey never truly ends. What was once worn two months ago might very well be different than what we wear on our bodies in the present.

Finding one’s own personal style can be inspired from daily things in one’s life. From artwork, to photographs on Instagram, to the funky wallpaper in an old house, inspiration is calling our names.

It is in these ordinary things that the extraordinary happens, where a pattern stuck out, sparking a purchase in a new shirt. Where the texture of Lake Michigan’s waves was reminiscent of an outfit seen during fashion week.

The beauty of the ordinary is its potential to become so much more, something that becomes prevalent when finding your style.

What I have found to be most important in finding style is wearing what makes you most confident and what you feel most comfortable in.

While the sequenced mini skirt or leather jacket might look fierce, sometimes clothes just aren’t comfortable — not to say they shouldn’t be worn, but a thought to consider.

There is no right or wrong choice in making up a personal style, adding to the uniqueness of it all. We choose what we want to wear as a way to further express ourselves, something reminiscent when glancing around campus on a sunny, warm day in Milwaukee or a chilly fall afternoon.

A key idea when trying to find your style is owning what you are wearing, something that comes with confidence — making the process a never-ending cycle.

“I found my personal style through trial and error, along with finding style mentors that reflected a similar body type and style I wanted to achieve,” Sam Obrochta, a sophomore at Marquette University said. Now I don’t bother trying to fit into clothes that don’t look right on me, even if they’re in a magazine. I adapt those styles to fit my body and my personality.”

Sam, like many others, went through the process of trial and error in finding her style— something most of us can relate to when looking back at middle school photos. What is important to note is not following the trends in magazines and media if they don’t work for you. Finding your style is all about rocking what makes you feel best, not what advertisers want.

Style icons are a great resource when trying to figure out your style, as there is no rule saying that we have to start from scratch. There is something special about recognizing and appreciating someone else’s style, as fashion is a way to express oneself, making style icons essential.

At the end of the day, playing to your strengths and knowing yourself and what makes you feel best is just the beginning of the long and never-ending journey to finding your personal style that will be sure to rock this world.

The best part is that there is no wrong answer when it comes to what will make up your personal style — the possibilities are endless.
