Bicol IT’s First Blockchain Meetup in 2019

Last Saturday, June 29, 2019, Bicol IT conducted their first Blockchain Meetup with the topic, “SparkPoint: The First Cryptocurrency from Bicol”. This event was in partnership with SparkPoint, CryptoSolitaire, and OnliCoin. 20 people attended the event which was held at Ctrl Alt Work, a lively coworking space in Legazpi City.

First to speak was Carlo Pinto, the Auditor and Financial Consultant of Bicol IT. He introduced the non-profit organization and discussed its history. Bicol IT was founded in 2013 by Harris Rainier Osiana together with his co-founders: Rico Zuñiga, Richard Nacar, Jason Batalla, and Chard Gonzales.

Known as the biggest and most active tech community in Bicol with almost 5,000 members, Bicol IT is a community of IT professionals, students, educators, and enthusiasts who are from and in the Bicol Region, Philippines. They conduct regular seminars for free to augment the training needs and expose others to the latest trends in Information Technology.

Bicol IT’s objectives are as follows:

  • Empower Bicolanos to be competent technology professionals by conducting free tech events
  • Promote startup culture, hackathons, mentorship, volunteerism, and camaraderie
  • Collaboration with different technology schools and members in the whole region
  • Showcase the apps and technology projects created by Bicolanos; and
  • Make the Bicol region a regularvenue of national and international technology events and become the Silicon Valley of south Luzon

The second speaker was the Chief Technology Officer of SparkPoint, Rico Zuñiga. SparkPoint Ecosystem is a decentralized payment gateway with integrated crypto exchanges, e-learning, Blockchain-based games, and e-commerce. Rico introduced SRK, SparkPoint’s own token which is now tradable on BitMart, Hotbit and p2pb2b. He also introduced DLX, SparkPoint’s food delivery mobile application with integrated cryptocurrency rewards in the form of SRK.

Next was the Head of Marketing of CryptoSolitaire, Ismael Jerusalem. Ismael discussed CryptoSolitaire’s main goal which is to combine Creativity and Technology. He also talked about the advantages of buying collectible decks of cards that have real intrinsic value from being authentic works of art. Ismael believes that this value will also rise, as the artists behind the work become more popular.

Lastly, Michael Alcala, the founder of OnliCoin introduced what it is all about. OnliCoin was one of the earliest cryptocurrency projects in the Philippines and has been around since 2017. It aims to provide safe, fast, and easy remittance services and low-risk investment opportunities, both locally and abroad.

The aim of the Blockchain Meetup is to build a stronger cryptocommunity in Bicol. The organizers are planning to make this a regular event where fellow Blockchain enthusiasts can meet and discuss ideas. The event concluded with a quick networking session with the participants walking around, holding a slice of pizza on one hand, and beer on the other.
