Two weeks of composting
Did you know that there are compostable bags? Well, I sure didn’t. I found this out when I was dumping my first week’s worth of food scraps at the Columbia Heights Farmer’s Market.
I was walking up to the food waste drop-off bin with my plastic bag in hand and then I saw it. I saw a green bag that looked like plastic but felt a little like paper when you touched it being thrown into the food waste bin. My curiosity got the better of me and I asked the lady in charge, “Wait isn’t that a plastic bag? Aren’t plastic bags not compostable?” She responded, “Well, actually, those are compostable bags. If you feel it, you can see that it’s not like other bags. It might look like it’s trash but it’s actually compostable.”

In D.C. there is always at least one farmers market place in each ward where you can drop-off your compost. There is always a place for compost.
To be honest, composting was one of the easiest and most effective DOTs. Composting has been super easy for me these past two weeks. I was able to get the hang of taking any food that I didn’t eat and putting it in a bag in the freezer. I put the bag in the freezer so that the food doesn’t start to smell.
I will admit that it had been a little confusing in the first week because I didn’t know what I could and could not compost. Also because I kept forgetting to put the scraps in the compost bag instead of the trash can. However, going to the fridge as soon as I had food scraps on my hands quickly became a new habit. One more thing was that my mom kept putting food in the trash can when she was cleaning out the food so I had less compost in the bag than I could have otherwise.

Composting is just great when you know that you are helping the Earth. Especially now that there is global warming. We should try to do the best we can to help the Earth go back to the way it was.
Just know that when you are helping the Earth, you are helping other people as well.
