After a week of recording the average shower times of members of my family, I learned how long my showers really were. My family’s average shower time was 6.10 minutes, which I thought was pretty good at the time. I then learned that according to www.waterinfo.org, the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water everyday while the average African family uses about 5 gallons of water everyday. It took some time for this fact to really sink in but it made me want to save water even more!

Here are some fast facts on water consumption:

Now lets talk about what changes I’ve had to make regarding taking shorter showers. My average shower was 7.4 minutes but my goal is to bring that down to 4 minutes. At first my showers were a bit rushed, but after the second day, I was already taking much shorter showers. Besides using my phone timer, I also have a different way of timing my showers. Since I usually listen to music in the shower, I’ve been trying to fit my shower into two songs. Today’s two songs were: “The Monster” by Eminem ft. Rihanna and part of “Where is The Love” by The Black Eyed Peas. That shower ended up being 5.28 minutes long.

In conclusion, taking shorter showers is an extremely easy way to live a more sustainable lifestyle and help the global water crisis.
