I have finished my DOT project after a very long month. I was pretty happy to finish, but I didn’t not miss meat as much as I thought I would. This has been a great project and experience and I was glad to be a part of it.

Before I officially became vegetarian I had to do a baseline week which means that I had to record the amount of meat I ate for a week. Then we did the DOT project, and finally at the end we saw the total amount of meat we saved. The results kind of surprised me. In total I saved 80 ounces of meat in just one month! This was really big for me because if i’m being honest I really didn’t think I would be saving much. 80 ounces is a lot and it only took a month to save that. If you want to see more about the baseline and data click here.

I learned a lot by doing this project. It was not as hard as I thought it would be. I though I would be hungry all the time and would have to cheat because I needed to eat meat. However I didn’t feel this at all. The reality is that many people think you have to eat meat even though you really don’t. The mistake many people make is that there not eating the proper food in order to become a vegetarian. Being a vegetarian doesn’t just mean eating only salads and fruits, that’s just a part of it. There are many foods that do not include meat. This is the mistake I made during my project. At first I kept saying to myself that this was easy and that I just needed to eat many fruits and vegetables. I repeated the same foods almost every week. Although I did not feel any different I later on realized that it was much more than salads and vegetables. I needed to try and experience new food creations and try out new things. I wish I did this because I think it would have been a little bit easier. If you need help finding some vegetarian recipes check out this website.

I was really proud to be able to complete this project. Learning the amount of meat I was able to save really made me happy. Im only in eighth grade but in the future I hope to try this project again. If I was able to save 80 ounces of meat in just one month I think others can to. We need to help our planet even if it means some of us having to play the small part.
