WOW… I take long showers

It all started when I used to take a shower and realized it took me almost ten minutes to get in and out of the shower. At the time, I just thought that how long I took to take a shower didn’t matter. After learning about water scarcity in science class, I started to reflect on my actions. Planet Earth doesn’t have unlimited water, so we have to use it sparingly. Taking shorter showers is one good way to start.

This video shows how we can take shorter showers, and how it will not only affect us now, but also in the future. To learn more information about taking shorter showers and water conservation, watch this video.

For my DOT project, an eighth grade sustainability project, my best friend Eva and I decided to start taking shorter showers. However, we wanted to not only change our daily lifestyles but have others change theirs as well. Because after all, as Gandhi said, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.”

Over five weeks, my neighbors and I will be recording the length of two showers in our households per day, and Eva will do the same with her neighbors. At the end of the five weeks, the neighborhood with the most gallons of water saved will have an article written about them in the Northwest Current.

You might be thinking what I used to think about how long your shower takes. Why does my small action matter? Here’s my answer:

  1. Taking shorter showers helps conserve water, so we won’t have to worry about having enough.
  2. Taking shorter showers saves you money!
  3. Taking shorter showers also doesn't dry out your skin, so it is also beneficial for your body!

If you still decide that my reasons to take shorter showers aren’t good enough, there are more! Many colleges recognize this issue, and are also trying to make change, like the University of California Los Angeles and Boston University.
