The 2017 edition of Al Roker’s “Rokerthon” came to an exciting conclusion Friday morning at Oswego State, and what a scene it was on the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena.

Oswego State broke the Guinness World Record for the “Longest conga line on ice” by 240 people, a record previously held by a group of people in the U.K. at the Canary Wharf.

Guinness World Records representative Michael Empric was on hand Friday morning to be the official judge, along with several Oswego student stewards, to ensure the record-breaking attempt was official.

The rules are quite simple, according to Empric. All that was necessary for the record to be broken was for all participants to “be in movement, it has to be a conga performed to music, so step-step-step-out. Everyone has t0 have their hands on the person’s hips in front of them. It needs to be a constantly moving line,” Empric explained.

Sounds easy, right? Exactly. It was. The one attempt on live, national television went over smoothly, without any hitches. But this is not a very commonly heard-of record, as the previous holders set the bar at 353 people over 4 years ago. When most people think of conga lines, ice skating isn’t usually in that same thought.

“This is one of those crazy Guinness World Record titles that sounds ridiculous, but people love trying,” Empric said.

World record ideas can come from anywhere. One minute someone thinks they have something crazy, the next minute, an even more bizarre idea spawns. And you can bet Guinness will be there to record it.
