Why you should choose a subscription model for your art of video content
In short — So you can make a living from what you love to do. But feel free to read the rest of my article for even more insight.
Ok.. make a living through a subscription model. Sounds simple enough but there are some things to consider and obstacles to remove to get you ‘there’ from ‘here’.
A subscription channel for your videos and visual storytelling would enable you to bring in resources that allow you to generate more story and video production on things that truly inform and inspire. Things that need to be said, seen, and made known to people who find salvation, recovery or just escape in the ideas and emotions of your muse.
Being great at what you artistically craft is only part of the equation.
To make a living at your passion, the need is to be able to get a return so that you can continue in an on-going basis. Where there is money to be made however, there are those who will pop up and try to get some for themselves.
You can’t beat ‘FREE’ when it comes to getting people to view your life’s work and passions. It removes all the financial risk — for them. You’re guaranteed to not get a return on your investment when there is no asking price. It’s a race to the bottom when you ‘give it away’ to be sure, but what does it also say subconsciously to the recipient of the value of your work? How you value your work.
They won’t pay if it’s already free
This is the trouble YouTube is experiencing moving their audience to a paying subscription model. Viewers are not motivated at all to start paying for something that they were receiving, just seeking it out, or coming across it, for free. They are even less motivated to pay for content and subscriptions to just view it earlier, when it will be free in a short time. In most cases a matter of as little as three days earlier.
What is also missing in this model for you is fulfillment as an artist. If you’re busy chasing a certain type of audience, making decisions based on the kind of return you may, or may not get, your vision is no longer clearly expressed and resonating with people who would appreciate and respond to your true vision. The key component and connection is lost.
There is also the business side of things to have to keep a watch on the ‘making’ in ‘making a living’ (from what you love to do). YouTube (I’m not picking on Big Red, it’s just that they are most well-known for video content on-line) struggling to make money off of their subscriber base has turned to their content creators to get profits. How?
An unfair business model?
First, YouTube gets half of advertising revenue from a subscription channel. That’s right, almost half of the money that advertisers are paying for your audience to see, that are drawn by your content, they came to see your art and work, YouTube gets almost half!
The financial model for you on YouTube gets even worse! You may be saying, “Well, half of something is better than nothing.” But you’re not even getting that. YouTube “offers” (aka forces you) into Partners when you have a paid subscription channel. Creators are required to participate in the subscription offering, or every video on their channels will be set to ‘private’.
Your revenues from YouTube’s subscription channels will be pooled, with all Partners receiving 55 percent of the total. But then, they divvy it out. Individual partners’ (that’s what they call you when you’ve been assimilated) Individual partners’ portions will be dispensed based on how much time viewers spend watching their channels. So even when you build your channel up to what YouTube sees as a medium-sized channel, you still may not earn meaningful revenue from your subscription channel. Those are the details of the unfair business model. Don’t get me wrong, I love YouTube for promotional purposes, I just don’t like it as a means of living.
There is a need to go over the details of an unfair business model so you can see how a fair business model works. And when you have one, a fair and working business model, how that will enable you to make a living from what you love to do.
