Mini Challenge 2 — Designing

In the designing phase, we decided to start from where we live — Taiwan.

In the first step, we explored the relationship between adverse events, social capital, community resilience and smart city by reviewing literature to gain a solid foundation regarding the issue. We annotated our ideas on post-it notes and formulated several potential problems needed to be solved. In this phase, we then also formed our design principal “ Make technology accessible for everyone” and we hope not only benefits for particular group of people.

Narrowing down the idea using hierarchical clustering.

In second step, we narrow down the idea and define the problem we want to focused on. We used hierarchical clustering method to converge our ideas. After the clustering and discussion, we considered earthquake is a natural disaster occurring frequently in Taiwan and Indonesia and cause serious damage to the country, so we chose earthquake as our research topic. To combined with the concept of challenge topic, we stated our problem statement clear: enhancing neighborhood connection to strengthen social capital, enabling a community resilience to cope with earthquakes.

After identifying the theme we were going to tackle, we were going to decide who to design for. We thought about the scenario from our earthquake experience, and considered who were the stakeholders and what were their behavior, personality, goal and frustration? Based on this, we developed three personas.

3 personas.

After knowing who were the stakeholder, we conducted a brainstorming session with the goal of developing first design concept for our topic and stakeholders. During the session, we tried to encourage thinking outside the box. In addition, we also used TRIZ cards for helping us generating the first design concept.

After iterate the critique and brainstorm section, the final design solution we proposed was an IoT device which capable of amplifying our emotions from the main door of our home, and projecting it to the world. The device designed to withstand to worst possible scenario of an earthquake.
