After a fruitful discussion, we were finally doing prototype 🎉🎉🎉

Let’s review what we have done so far; the core value of our design is:

enhancing neighborhood connection to strengthen social capital, enabling a community resilience to cope with earthquakes.

We proposed the solution MooDoor, an interactive tangible objects that interacts with the individual and the communities.

Here’s a glimpse of the design feature

  1. Emotion display

By using an embedded display and lighting technology, the door of the house will change it’s color and pattern due to the individual’s emotion. The individual has complete control on what will be displayed, ranging from simple mind-frames until complex dynamic haptic signals illustrated in a Valence-Arousal 2D emotion plane.

For example, Esther was not in a good mood today, her doors showed in gray shade and with raindrop dripping down, indicating that she didn’t want to be disturbed today.

2. Social interaction indicator

Individual can also choose a great variety of icons to be displayed, representing either the hobbies or the skill set of the individual.

For example, Licheng’s displayed birthday cake icon on his door to let neighbors knew it’s his big day. Pablo, who was new to this community, walked pass and noticed it was his neighbor’s birthday. Then he decided to grab this chance to get to know his neighbor.

3. Emergency alert

The activation of this mode will be automatically triggered by an adverse event, a natural disaster. MooDoor as a device that is connected to the smart city network. The shock will send an alert to smart city network. Authorities such as government, disaster management department, police, fire department and also selected media will be able to monitor the status in real-time. Within a limited period of time, the owner would require to indicate that the person is safe. Failing to do so will result in an emergency signal sent to the smart city network and also the neighborhood’s network. In addition, if the user is not at home at that time, the MooDoor’s key will show the alert information and it can be turn off the signal remotely.
