Resume parser and what to consider

With the ATS being considered a must in the hiring business, the management is standardizing more and more cost-effective HR technology. Trying to be more focused on the candidate’s experience, resume parser and all of its advantages have already established itself with the recruiters. Using integrated or separate resume parsers has almost deleted manual importing data, so now recruiters don’t have to count how many months have you been working a certain job. Even though resume parsers are nearly perfect they are the blessing and a tremendous addition to the hiring process.

What is a Resume parser?

Resume parsing (or CV parsing) is a process that allows you to convert an unstructured form of resume data into a structured format in an intelligent way. The parsing software has to rely on complex rules and algorithms to correctly capture desired information in the resumes. With resume parser, the contact information, work history, relevant skills, educational background, personal information, and more specific information about the candidate is easily accessible.

One of the biggest complaints that candidates searching for jobs have is the length of the application process that can take even months. You have to consider that recruiters after looking into hundreds of resumes daily can easily miss or lose track of potential candidates. But with resume parser instead of having to look at every resume and filter what is important, recruiters can move through the interview process and fill positions at a faster rate. The hiring process is far more efficient when recruiters don’t have to manually screen every candidate and can focus more on other parts of the hiring process, which leads to more satisfied candidates.

What should candidates consider?

As the technology becoming more effective and standardized, candidates should consider what resume parsing means for them. As the process of hiring is evolving and changing every day, candidates should write their resumes and applications suitable to the trending technology. Crafting a resume to impress a recruiter is not something you would want to do anymore, concentrate on writing your resume to be relevant to the parsing systems.

It is best if you use .doc or .docx and if you use PDF format please make sure you export it from your word processor — don’t scan your resume into an image. Use one standard font throughout the resume and make sure you have the correct spacing. Don’t use WordArt or tables and columns because the ordering of the sentences might not turn out as you wish. It would be best if you put your name in the filename of your resume and use appropriate date format (day, month and year), appropriate names for section titles (such as “Personal details” or “Work experience”), only use common abbreviations (like BD or CFO), typical names for job titles. You should use spellcheck so that typos and misspellings don’t occur.
