Narcissistic abuse is an umbrella term for an array of abusive behaviors narcissists hurl toward their loved ones.

These abusive behaviors run the gamut, stretching across multiple subtypes:

  • Emotional abuse
  • Psychological abuse
  • Financial abuse
  • Physical abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Spiritual abuse (such as religious control, brainwashing, cults)

Narcissistic abuse is not quite the same as non-narcissistic abuse. Narcissistic abuse may arise from deep inner shame, and tends to be more cyclic, with alternating “sweet/mean” cycles known as “idealization — devalue — discard” phases.

Narcissistic abuse can include a wider span, ranging from the ultra-subtle to the in-your-face-extreme. It can be even more insidious than non-narcissistic abuse because it can be so subtle that you don’t even realize it’s taking place. Often, it’s not so much as what they say and do as it is what they don’t say and do.

So in this article, I’ll delve into a few of the signs/symptoms occurring within you…
