14 Things I’m Doing For Myself This Valentine’s Day
Screw self-love, I’m talking self-romance
I am happily (most days, we’re human) married to a man who like many, could not care less about Valentine’s Day. I can’t give him any grief because, why should he?
The holiday does seem comical. Cupid, the ever-present hearts, the media presence of it all, and the endless Hallmark cards.
It is ridiculous, I agree. Especially if you’re waiting for a single day to feel loved and appreciated in your relationship. You deserve that 365.
But, I love holidays. Shamelessly. I love them all.
So, today, I will be self-romancing myself.
One, because I am on call and we had a nice dinner last night. Two, because my husband also deserves a day of self-romance. If he wants to play video games all day today — go for it. If he wants to watch hockey and fiddle with his draft while drinking beers — have at it.
We both deserve a day that makes us feel good. That’s what today is all about, isn’t it?
Today I’m going to do things for myself.
Chocolates for breakfast
I’m a pretty healthy person. This morning, I woke up and was brewing my coffee when I saw the unfinished bag of chocolate almonds out on the counter.
You know what? Coffee has never had such a nice side dish.
The Bath, a candle, and Firefly Lane
A way too hot bath, a nice tea or drink (mocktail, stupid call), the flicker of a candle, and a crummy Netflix series that's just begging to be binge-watched.
Trust me, there are tons on there right now.
Ideas: Firefly Lane, To all the boys (3), Cecil Hotel Documentary (you’ve been warned).
A long deep stretch
A closed bedroom door away from the puppy, an hour alone with my yoga mat, YouTube and a good, long deep stretch.
Skipping the dishes, literally
Unless my husband feels like cooking tonight, which I’m going to guess on his self-romance day he doesn't — it’s uber or skip the dishes tonight folks.
A long dreamy nap with my four-legged friend
Around 2 pm when I start to get the afternoon lull, instead of making myself a second coffee and thinking about those Sunday chores — I’m heading for bed.
Me, the puppy, and a good old-fashioned afternoon nap.
A shopping spree like Julia Roberts in Pretty Women
Not literally, I’m trying to save for a home for gosh sakes. But, a shopping cart fill and exit type of day. If I feel like wasting time on the internet today, I’m doing it without any guilt.
You know what, maybe I will treat myself, why not?
Become one with the furniture
If I feel so inclined to be horizontal for the day, it’s today. No strings or guilt attached.
Self Spa
The bath is only the beginning of the possibilities here.
Maybe I’ll throw in a leg shave, lotion, the works. Maybe I’ll do a face mask and scrub my whole body till I could slip across the tile floor on my way to the couch.
Self-love
Say no more. An open invitation to my husband. No dogs allowed.
Short cuts on all tasks
There may still need to be things done today. But, the laundry certainly won’t get folded out of the dryer. The groceries are being delivered and the rest can wait till tomorrow.
Book a Session
Things to look forward to this week: therapy, a massage, and a chiropractor appointment. Maybe I’ll even throw in a hair appointment in the far future — girls gotta live.
Make a list
I love to write it all down.
Today, I’ll be making a list of goals, things I appreciate about myself, and things that I’m looking forward to this year.
No matter how unpromising we all feel 2021 to be. There's always some good.
Call all my loves
Today, I’m calling them all. I’m telling everyone I love them. My mum, dad, sister, grandma. You’ll be hearing from me.
There isn’t anything more heartwarming than hearing from the ones you love.
No guilt, no shame, no remorse
No matter what I feel like doing today, I'm doing it. Normally for me, Sundays are a day of picking up what hasn’t been done over the weekend. I prep, clean and get ready for the week ahead.
But, today is Valentine's Day. It’s a day of love — for each other and for ourselves. Also, I live in British Columbia, Canada. Tomorrow is a statutory holiday.
So, really it's a win-win. Even if I’m on call again.
Happy Valentines Day!
