Self-deprecation can take many forms. Often times people just make themselves the butt of their own jokes — blatantly telling themselves “I’m not smart enough/I’m too ugly/I’m too lazy etc.” I hear it all the time. Sometimes it even takes the form of self-loathing.

I know it’s easier said than done, but you need to stop that shit.

First, stop saying it out loud. Stop joking about how dumb, lazy, or ugly you are, or whatever your particular hangups may be.

Next, examine why you feel that way.

Did someone ever actually tell you that? If so, fuck them. If not, then what? Did you do poorly in school? Maybe school wasn’t your natural strong suit. That does not mean you’re dumb. There are many ways to be intelligent, surely you’re good at something. Figure out what that is, and build yourself up with your strengths instead of focusing constantly on your weaknesses.

Do you think you’re too lazy? You don’t have to be. Get some discipline, make a goal, and start working towards it.

Do you think you’re too ugly? Hit the gym, lose weight, practice good hygiene. Have confidence and smile. Those few things go a long way.

Constant negative self-talk will hold you back: in your career, in your relationships, in your personal growth.

You won’t pursue opportunities because you’ll think you don’t deserve them. You won’t leave your comfort zone because you lack the confidence that you can succeed.

I’m here to tell you that you are good enough.

You deserve the life that you’ve dreamed of. You deserve to experience great things. You don’t need to stay stuck in a mediocre job, relationship, or living situation. You are amazing, you are unique. No one else is you, with your experiences and strengths. Own that shit. Live and thrive.
