Love of My Life

I didn’t hear you
Didn’t see you coming
Didn’t notice the changing tide
The ardent breeze
The gods scheming.

Barefoot, I traipsed along the stream,
I laughed
I shivered
I marveled at the ripple;
Like a child
I threw a rock into the water
Not knowing the swell
that would follow,
That would swallow me whole.

Then one day
I saw the shape of you,
Marveled at the shape of you;
I saw your smile
Heard your voice
And I…

I strained to catch my breath.

I’d seen your face before —
Why should I know you?
I thought back then,
But that was then.
And now,
The changing tide
The swell…

You caught me by surprise,
I sought to break the vexing arrow,
Indignant
At the madness
The scheming gods
My foolish heart —
Reluctant.

Then followed eager days
And timid nights
Of throwing rocks like children,
Watching ripples in the stream;
We see the changing tide
And feel the swells within.

And now I know you
As If I’d always known you,
Two peas in a pod
You and I.

However it happened
It happened —
The rocks
The stream
The tide
The days and nights
Your voice
Your touch
Your smile.

How could I have known?
It was you —
All along, it was you…

Always you.
