We were both going

to
sneak
up
on

this love

as if either of us is good at tiptoeing
instead of stomping heavy-footed
through a land of lithe dancers who plié
while you and I ignore convention and
drop our cardboard and a beat and spin wildly
like we might just own the center of gravity

this time

twisting together in this dizzying dance
after which neither of us expected to tangle so
completely in an embrace where escaped sighs
took with them any hope we weren’t meant to
smack into each other and bumble hand in hand
from that kiss on a street corner.
